General User Proposals

Step 1: Register as an APS User

Before you can submit a proposal, you need an APS badge number.

  • New to APS? Register as an APS New User
  • Returning user? Renew your registration if it has expired
  • Important: Start this process early—registration can take time, especially for international users

Your badge number and password will be needed for all following steps.

Step 2: Learn About the GUP Program

Visit the APS page for General User Proposals (GUP) to understand:

  • How proposals are reviewed
  • What information you'll need
  • Timeline and deadlines

Step 3: Prepare Your Proposal

Log in to the Proposal System using your badge number and password.

What to do:

  1. Click "Create a New Proposal"
  2. Select "General Users"
  3. Choose "Macromolecular Crystallography Proposal" (includes rapid access MC)

Pro Tips:

  • Combine all active projects from your lab into one proposal—you don't need separate proposals for each project
  • Provide detailed, accurate information to help reviewers evaluate your work fairly
  • Select both 22-ID-D and 22-ID-E as beamlines if you'd like to use either

Step 4: Submit Your Proposal

Once you've completed all sections, submit your proposal through the APS system.

What happens next:

  • Your proposal undergoes peer review by an APS Beam Time Allocation Committee (BAC)
  • Proposals are scored based on scientific merit
  • Good news: Your proposal stays active for six runs—no need to resubmit each cycle!

Step 5: Schedule Your Beamtime

If your proposal is approved for SER-CAT beamlines:

  1. We contact you: SER-CAT staff will reach out to arrange your data collection schedule
  2. We handle the request: Our local staff will create the Beam Time Request for you—this ensures your allocated hours match your needs
  3. You collect data: Work with our team to schedule your session on 22-ID-D or 22-ID-E
